    Where can I get map overviews?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 05:26 PM PDT

    It seems so simple, for a game that's 20 years old, full color maps of areas taken from game data should be available, but the only things I can find are black and white versions from the Prima official guide released back when. I tried downloading some modding tools to extract the maps (encoded in a proprietary ".dx" format) but I couldn't get it to work.

    The Most Overrated Orchestral Take on the UNATCO Theme...Now Remastered for the DX 20th Anniversary

    Would a game like the 1st Deus Ex be allowed to be created today in a post-coronavirus world with themes like the Grey Virus?

    Lines fatigue

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 12:42 PM PDT

    Important: before you react, please know this: I don't mean to offend anyone or tell anyone what to do. This post is a genuine ask for an advice, as I feel I'm looking at things at some wrong angle.

    Being a huge Original Deus Ex fan myself, I've been enjoying people occasionally saying "My X is augmented" or "That makes X one ugly son of a bitch" here and there. Me, I've been guilty with abusing my favourite "I was never properly trained in its operation", and... what the hell, I've even enjoyed people totally using the phrase "I never asked for this" in all kinds of relevant and irrelevant contexts (even though it doesn't originate from DX1 and <controversy ahead!> frankly speaking I don't even find this particular line that funny/unique/definitive or possessing whatever quality it takes to make a phrase go viral).

    You know, it's specifically fun to observe the DX lines being used in non-DX related contexts. Like imagine:

    • you're in a restaurant waiting for a meal;
    • the waiter brings you not what you've ordered;
    • you go like "I never asked for this"

    Then all of a sudden the guy/gal (after some awkward pause, of course) giggles, or grins, or winks at you, or pats you on a shoulder, or maybe calls you on it with "hah, geek!" — whatever — but basically it's so much fun to make connections this way (maybe there's even some scientific name for the phenomena that explains this type of accidental probing for mutual interests to establish the connection — please excuse my lack of intelligence, and please advise in the comments if you have any suggestions).

    Everybody loves these lines for many different reasons, which we can try to explain logically, but really I tend to believe that it was a combination of many subjective factors which ultimately made these lines iconic.

    Now, to the punchline. I must admit: after recently joining r/DeusEx I've seen all those great lines used so many times that they start to have an opposite effect on me (again, pretty sure there's a scientific name of this phenomena). I mean, it's like hearing a good joke over and over again: it's fun for first few times, but on 5th it's like "Mkay, yeah", on 10th it's like "Heard it.", on 20th it's like "Please make it stop!". I don't know if it's related to the 20th anniversary, but the lines are literally in every comment here!

    As a very rough comparison, imagine saying "May the force be with you" in all Star Wars threads, which people tend to find vulgar.

    I'm pretty sure I'm not alone here who played DX during just the right time in my life to make it influence me in some specific and weird way. So there are definitely those who love these lines, too (otherwise, why use them, right?). The questions are: does anyone feel anything similar? How are you coping? (i.e. does it even bother you to any meaningful extent?)

    And a tangentially relevant question: why hasn't DX:MD given birth to that many lines? (In fact, are there any at all? The only one I care to remember is the one that was boldly promoted in their intro: "I once thought I could save the world... now look at it".)

    Thanks everyone for reading, hope this post doesn't make me one ugly son of a bitch :)

    Is this series worth getting into?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 08:24 AM PDT

    So Ive been wanting to play the Deus Ex games for some time but ive always been reluctant. Ive heard the last game in the series has an incomplete story and thus I shouldnt bother. Other than that Ive read that the first game was known only for the gameplay which is ofcourse is outdated. I know the opinion of people in this subreddit might be biased but i dont know where else should i ask.
