Did anyone else feel like Area 51 was the weakest part of the original Deus Ex? Posted: 22 Jun 2021 01:45 PM PDT I loved the original Deus Ex. I got the game in August 2000 and I still have the original disc. It is still one of the best games I've ever played and probably my favourite single-player PC game overall. There were a lot of iconic areas that I remember very fondly. New York, Paris, Hong Kong, Vandenberg and the Ocean Lab were all memorable in their own ways. HK was the standout for me. I just found Area 51, the final area of the game, to be a little bit disappointing compared to the rest of the levels. I also don't like any of the three endings that much. I've seen quite a few comments over the years from people who have said they also didn't like the endings. I usually choose the dark age ending as it made the most sense to me. Never liked the idea of JC merging with Helios and ruling the world on his own, or helping the Illuminati control the world, which is what happens in the other endings if I'm not mistaken. It's been over 10 years since I played so I can't remember everything. Hoping to play through it again soon with New Vision. [link] [comments]
Mankind Divided questions and frustrations Posted: 22 Jun 2021 08:40 PM PDT To start off I must say I am very disappointed in the overall story of this game, especially the ending, given how good the story of Human Revolution was. Now to my questions:
Both those questions are mostly frustration over how poorly the story was handled and how some key aspects were left out. I get that they left the ending with a cliffhanger, probably because they planned to make a 3rd game to answer all these questions, but I think one of the reasons this game did so poorly and there won't be a 3rd game is because of how poorly the story was told. Parallels in other works of fiction, and one of non-fiction. Posted: 22 Jun 2021 04:48 PM PDT I just started playing MD last night. Pretty awesome! Great premise, cool gameplay, and great worldbuilding. One of the first games I've toned down the difficulty on however! Anyway. I just wanted to mention that its also a lovely coincidence that I just started listening to Robert Evans' "After the Revolution". Without spoiling anything, its a fantastic short fiction novel being released chapter by chapter as an audiobook. Its set in 2070 (which is a much more reasonable timeline IMHO than DE), 20 years after a second American Civil War. Similar to the DE universe, there are augmented ("chromed" to Evans) humans and non augmented. Most people have prolonged their life or fixed things wrong with biotechnology, but military personnel and folks in the various factions of the broken US have more significant and powerful augmentation. Its not a central part of the series, but its a major character plot for one of the protagonists. Evans derives his vision for the future from years of research and reporting in contemporary civil wars (Syria, Ukraine), as well as plenty of deep diving investigative journalism in his podcast It could Happen Here. Now, the pop culture fascination with human augmentation is nothing new. But untill recently, I always thought about it as just silly cool sci fi. Then I read Yuvall Noah Harrari's Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, his sequel to the bestselling and incredible read Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. In Deus, Harrari talks extensively about the advancement of biotechnology and self directed human evolution being borderline inevitable, and the issues that would arise because of this. I love when good fiction intersects with brilliant postulations from trusted authors, and especially when its a damn good looking video game. I thought you all might enjoy some of the literature referenced, and hoped this could lead to a cool discussion of the modern obsession with being more than____. [link] [comments]
