Trying to figure out what my favourite game is…

I guess Thief, Splinter Cell, Deus Ex, and Hitman are all bad stealth games

Who (if anyone) do you spare in non-pacifist playthroughs & why?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 09:16 PM PDT

Just finished another playthrough with GMDX (neither fully pacifist nor genocidal) and had an interesting conversation on this subject earlier, so the question came to my mind. Who do you choose to not kill when not playing JC (or for that matter, Alex D & Jensen) as someone who exclusively sneaks around and/or relies on non-lethal weapons?

For me, aside from major NPCs my usual list goes:

    • Civilians: Always spare where possible, I'll even reload saves if they get killed in the crossfire of my firefights. The only exception is Louis Pan, although I felt more generous in my last playthrough and merely knocked him out with the baton when he gave me lip instead of gibbing him with the GEP gun as I usually do.

    • NSF terrorists: Spare when it's tactical to do so, ie. I can KO them with the baton/prod or there's no nearby alarm they can set off while running around after being tranq'd. Always spare surrendering NSF outside of 'kill everyone for fun' playthroughs. No mercy for the ones who take hostages, however.

    • UNATCO troops: Spare whenever possible. They don't know whose bidding they're really doing, after all, and while their dialogue shows they can be overzealous in their fight against terrorists I've only seen, or rather read about one example of an unjustifiably cruel trooper in-game (Jaime mentions one prodded a defeated NSF grunt seven times & gave him 3rd degree burns in an email). Plus JC's shown to be on good terms with every trooper he interacts with before turning on the organization, even the ones at the NSF warehouse who acknowledge you're not supposed to be there let you go about your business until Simons gives them the call.

    • Riot cops & American soldiers: Same as above.

    • Criminals: I only spare the Rooks, and sometimes not even them (probably a bug, but I can actually get two LAMs from El Rey for free - one by whacking Rock as he wants, and again by extorting him after killing the other Rooks, which is odd because I think he's only supposed to have one). Maybe the thugs shaking down Mole People in Hell's Kitchen, if I can prod them quickly enough without getting myself shot on Realistic.

    • MJ12 forces: Kill pretty much all of them I come across. At their most moral they're mercenaries willingly doing MJ12's dirty work for a paycheck, at worst they're pretty massively monstrous themselves. Sometimes I knock out the Paris street patrols as a favor to Michel's mother after she begs for her son's life. More rarely I'll have JC do the same with the MJ12 sewer detachment (because at that time JC has no idea who these guys are) and the few MJ12 guys at the shipyard (because they're ostensibly FEMA agents), but that's about it.

    • MiBs/WiBs: Spare only Adept 34501. Sometimes I'll also spare the MiBs who attack the Dentons at the 'Ton as well, not quite for their sake but to make it easier to spare the lives of the UNATCO troops with them.

    • Triads: Spare, since they're pretty much always friendly and I don't make a habit of murdering NPCs with a green cursor over them unless they're Louis Pan. The only exception I make (outside of genocide playthroughs) is for the Luminous Path & Red Arrow guys fighting in the tunnel, and only if I have JC learn about the Triads' sex trafficking from the Old China Hand before they disappear - then lobbing a LAM or firing the GEP gun into their midst seems appropriate.

Outside DX1, I think my choices of people to spare are pretty conventional from what I've read here or on other DX-related forums throughout the years - non-Templars/Illuminati in IW when I'm not following their factions (upgraded Spy Drone + nearby Repair Bot = no reason not to simply KO any enemy I run across anyway) and most enemies in HR & MD, besides the Hengsha Court Gardens raid & ambush on Malik.

How conversations are organized in .DRM files? (And how .DRMs work in general)

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 03:44 AM PDT

Is there anybody who has this figured? I'd like to create a comprehensive conversation editor to make (or improve, in my case) game's localized subtitles, but the data format puzzles me to no end.

I've got Gibbed's Tools. I unpacked the game, but resulting files seem to be a terrible mess with no rhyme or reason to their organization. The texts' file itself, locals.bin, is a plain unordered list of strings with lines belonging to the same dialogue residing in completely different places. So the conversation logic should be hidden somewhere in .DRM files, but for the life of me, I can't figure how those refer to each other, and more importantly, how to automatize their scanning. I can see audio paths somewhere inside "DTPData" chunks, but that's all I could figure. There are plenty of *other* chunks that apparently mean something else... how do I explain it all to a parser?

I've looked into Grognougnou's "List of text tutorials" on moddb, but those are focused on items, augmentations, and other similar stuff, not what I need... besides, they're rather a collection of fragmentary examples of what can be achieved than the key to the system.

Is there anywhere else I might learn from?

    Thanks.

Okay, let me just reel this in...What the fuck? How the fuck did Mankind Divided manage to corrupt TWO SAVES at the same time?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 07:47 PM PDT

    Warning. Angry rant ahead.

Okay, here's the thing. There I was, hacking away just after entering Golem and saving the guy's brother.
An oopsie happens and I die. Okay, that's okay, let me just press F9, I'm always quicksaving away.

I press F9 multiple times and nothing happens. Okay, weird, let me just reload the save manually. I press "Reload" and there's...nothing.
Okay, weird glitch, let me just close the game and open it again, all my saves will be there intact of course.

Close the game, open it again. Press "Load" and the game CRASHES. Every. Time.

Well that's no issue, i don't need to load the save manually right? Just press continue and I'm sure I'll be back at Golem, being opressed as usual.

I press Continue and I'm back at the fucking abandoned L.I.M.B clinic after talking to Vega.

Both my AUTOSAVE and my QUICKSAVE made quite a while earlier were corrupted.

What the fuck? What the fuck is wrong with this game? I had save issues with Invisible War but frankly I expected them in that game.

Is there ANYTHING I could do to either restore my saves, prevent that from happening again, out of NOWHERE and for NO REASON? Or the best course of action is just to lose the patience and quit this piece of shit? Because quite frankly, this is fucking unnaceptable. Fuck this game.
