Mankind Divided is one of the best games I've ever played when considering level design and enviromental storytellig

    Hi!

I've recenty finished Mankind Divided for the first time and I'm really charmed by it, especially in terms of the level design and the enviromental storytelling apects of it. There are valid criticisms to be levelled against it, and ones with which I agree. That it was a clear middle chapter. That it sets up a lot of things but resolves few.

But I can't really fathom how someone could say this game was "short" or that there wasn't "much to do" in it. Because to me, Mankind Divided is one of the more densly decorated games I've EVER played when it comes to locations. Every inch of them is covered with small details to appreciate – graffiti, posters, books and various items.

And those are seldom totally incidental, either. Sure, some of the assets repeat, it's a necessity for the game to actually function on a technical level. But even then, they usually tell the story of the place. The ARC posters, for example. There are vandalized versions of them that instantly tell you that you've gone into a place that holds a stronger anti-aug prejudice, when WE ARE NOT MACHINES and WE ARE NOT OBSOLETE turn into WE ARE MACHINES and WE ARE OBSOLETE.

There are multitudes of examples of how the game builds it's world and establishes it's tone by just small clutter. Sure, it has done it already in Human Revolution (Jensen's apartment was a blast to explore), but here it's even more refined and more polished.

Take Jensen's apartment again, for example. I'veliterally spent an HOUR looking at everything in it and trying to decipher what does it say about his character and his place in the world (it's that long because it was a let's play, so I talked about it outloud. Would obviously be quicker if I just THOUGHT those things and moved on). And I enjoyed every second of it. In fact, Mankind Divided took me LONGER to finish than Human Revolution and I feel like a substatnial portion of that time was just appreciating every detail.

It's cluttered with painkillers, which establishes that Jensen suffers constantly due to his mechanical augmentation. There's a self-help book on the bedside table, which hints at him being possibly being depressed, but the mirrrors are whole, as opposed to Human Revolution, so maybe he's getting better. There are clock parts and magazines about augmentation, so he probably tries to keep up his manual dexterity and practice fine movements, but also understand how his new body works. There are Czech textbooks which tells you that he prepared for his assignment in Prague by studying the language. There's even a signed script of Francis' Pritchard's movie, which tells you that they still keep in touch and are on friendly terms, if Francis wanted Jensen to have it.

And so on, and so on. There's TON of things like that and I loved it. For example – the anti-depressant ads in public space. Not even mentioning how creative they are technically – there are ones that literally curve above the ground to give off an illusion of someone falling from the window – I feel like they establish in a gut-punching way how horrible the world is. There's literally depictions of suicide everywhere in public space, coupled with advertisments of psychotropic drugs. The tagline? „THERE'S A BETTER SOLUTION".

Or take the apartment of one of Jensen's neighbors. Slight spoilers ahead, so if you've never played the game, you might want to skip the next paragraph.

It's littered with cat-related stuff, which lets you know she's obsessed with cats. But on a more subtle level, it also gives major clues to a major sidequest, even before you begin with. There are book about dealing with psychological problems. There are needles, which a characteristic orange cap. There's also a telescope pointed at one of the windows in the tenement building…

And it's like that with everything. Every location, every quest. I've never had so much fun just LOOKING at stuff. Not shooting, not even talking to npcs. Just WALKING AROUND and looking at everything in detail, very closely and carefully.

If you haven't tried Mankind Divided because you heard it was „short" and „lazily done" or something like that, I hope that this short opinion might convince you to reconsider.

If you'd be interested in seeing the game being played by someone obsessed with small details, spending a lot of time breathing in the atmosphere and commenting on every minute thing I find and trying to establish how it relates to the lore and what it tells me about the world, you might want to check my blind Mankind Divided let's play:

Just replayed Mankind Divided after it's launch in 2015

I played Human Revolution and Mankind Divided back to back recently. I remember thinking Mankind was just okay after Revolution, but the second time playing it I got more into it and think it's actually a pretty worthy successor. The amount of exploring in the city areas and enemy bases is awesome, it takes hours in even small areas if you start breaking to every store/home and hacking computers. The story also seemed better on my 2nd play through. Even though Marchenko is missing for a huge chunk of the game, the first time speaking with him is really awesome with both him and Adam knowing they will face each other later with more than words. It makes it feel more like a buildup rather than waiting where is he knowing when he returns later. You also "see" more of him if you read his messages from computers. First time playing I remember he didn't feel like a good villain but if you think about it Zhao also had a pretty small presence and not the hardest final boss fight in Revolution (out of all the bosses on the hardest difficulty Barrett kicked my ass the most since I put all my Praxis on getting to new routes, not to combat early game). Still, I like Revolution and it's story and characters more, Pritchard and Sarif propably being my favourites of side characters from both games. Just wanted to say to anyone who had Mankind leave a meh feeling in their mind, try it again now that you know it's not 100% like Revolution with it's writing, you might be pleasently surprised on another playthrough.

I’m covering the Deus Ex UNATCO Theme and...

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 03:32 PM PDT

You might've seen me on here last week when I posted my original music inspired by Mankind Divided's soundtrack, the good reception made me smile but I saw a few comments like "make sure you add the game voices next time" and now I'm completely unsure by what that means. I've just finished covering the UNATCO theme from the original game and have made it sound as if it was written for HR/MD.. By "in game voices" what are people referring to? I want people to hear the cover and really feel the nostalgia so want it to be the best it can be! Is the instrumental alone enough or are these "game voices" required? Sorry if that makes little to no sense, I just want to make sure it's as good as can be. Thanks again

So, do you think it was Janice Reed who led to Vince Black getting killed?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 03:31 PM PDT

    A fun experience, but.

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 05:14 AM PDT

So, I just finished the first half of the game. There was actually a boss fight after all this time! And you had multiple ways to solve it, appreciated that. I quickly dealt with this Illuminati pawn, now it's time to get his masters and possibly find out more about the Collective too, they're also suspicious. I kinda got bored of Prague after all this time, can't wait for the second hub location and all its sidequests. And there's so many plot hooks that are set up: Aria is finally getting a field assignment, someone killed Vincent Black with a stiletto, Chang is onto me, Delara is pretty suspicious. Otar and Radich are going to have a war and I might have to help, Chikane has some personal story and might be working for someone. There's also some shady stuff with Adam and his augs, maybe I'll see more of Eliza, or maybe we'll see or hear from Megan, Pritchard or Malik. And Rabiah is totally the final location, right? Seeing how they're setting it up. Seems there's also some conflict within the Illuminati. The theories are keeping me on edge and I feel that paranoia. This is going to be awesome! No spoilers pls.

Anyway, there's some weird bug. When I try to continue the story, it skips to credits and even NG+ was unlocked. Any help?

    /s

    P. S. As someone who's hard of hearing, I'd like to thank the person who was responsible for subtitles in side conversations and Picus news reports(especially the last one). Thank you for reminding me that life is hard and you can never get too comfortable.

Deus Ex GOTY - 100fps cap?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 01:44 PM PDT

I'm playing the original Deus Ex GOTY from GOG, I have Kentie's D3D renderer and launcher so I have the game playing fullscreen at 1440p just fine. However, my monitor is good for 165fps, and my 980Ti isn't even breaking a sweat, but the game is capping itself at 100fps.

In kentie's configuration options, I have the FPS limit set to 0 for off. I tried setting it to 165, game still capped to 100. I've gone through the .ini and looked for all the framecaps I could find in there, and there are a couple that are set to 100fps. But if I change those to 165, when I run the game it'll still be capped at 100fps and those ini lines will have reverted back to 100 on their own if I exit the game and look.

Any idea? 100fps is nice, but my monitor can do 165fps, so I'd kinda like to let it. Thanks!

When buying the season pass, can you play without the extra items? (PS4)

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:24 AM PDT

Or are they added to your inventory automatically? I'm only thinking of buying it for the DLC missions, I don't care about the weapons and items. Actual items are no big deal, you can always drop them like in Human Revolution right? I just don't want to be stuck with the extra praxis points.
